Why we don't have to put up with leaking urine...
Women of the Shire (Woolooware), Bondi Junction and Cammeray who leak ...this is for you...
While leaking urine is very common in women (some studies report up to 70%), it is not normal and it can be improved, if not cured. Leaking is complex however, put simply it occurs when the pressure on the bladder (which stores the urine) exceeds the pressure created by the urethra (which stops urine coming out!)
Things that can contribute to excessive bladder pressure include:
-
excessive urine in the bladder – this may happen if you are not emptying your bladder fully
-
tightness or stiffness in the abdominal wall muscles and rib cage
-
the bladder muscle is squeezing too much (overactive bladder)
-
the urethra is moving too much under the pressure of a cough, sneeze, movement etc.
Things that cause reduced urethral pressure include:
-
the muscles in the wall of the urethra are weak due to ageing, hormonal changes, trauma
-
the pelvic floor muscles are weak, stretched or poorly coordinated
-
the urethra is moving too much under pressure
